The Incredible Years Parent Training (IYPT) program for parents of (pre-school) children aged 3-8 years

The Incredible Years Parent Training (IYPT) program for parents of (pre-school) children aged 3-8 years is a parent-training program for families with children ages 3–8 exhibiting early symptoms of challenging behaviours.

The trainings introduce parents to positive parenting skills in a simple, easy-to-understand and friendly way, which promotes children's cognitive, social and emotional development, better academic achievement and a safer and healthier growing up. Positive parenting strengthens the bond between child and parents, acts protectively and improves children's already challenging behaviour.

The program is designed to focus on altering parenting practices and promote the use of positive parenting and behavior management strategies (including logical consequences and parental monitoring) to address issues of children’s early conduct disorder behaviors at home and with other children. Overall, the goals of the IYPT program are to promote parental competencies, strengthen family relationships, and reduce child conduct disorder. Parenting trainings take place in groups of 10-12 parents once a week for two hours. There are 16 sessions per training, free of charge for parents.

Each parenting training group is led by two facilitators who are trained to deliver the Incredible Years BASIC–Parent Training (IYPT) program. In the group, parents have the opportunity to develop new strategies to manage their children's behaviour in a pleasant, collaborative atmosphere. Group work includes individual goal setting, role plays, self-reflection, feedback from facilitators and home activities. Brief videotaped vignettes of parents interacting with children in family life situations illustrate childrearing concepts. Group leaders use these scenes to facilitate group discussion and problem solving. Participants discuss the principles of childrearing and practice new skills through role-playing and home practice activities.
